I just found this little tidbit online.
In 2003 the BBC Radio Times Guide to TV Comedy came up with a list to pick the greatest sitcoms of all time. To my surprise "The Phil Silvers Show", aka Sgt. Bilko came in number one ahead of "Seinfeld" at number two.
I haven't seen many episodes, and it's been years since I saw them.
How high do you rate this sitcom?

Very high, but "Honeymooners" is still #1, IMHO. "Seinfeld" is definitely not #2. I enjoy the show very much but always thought it was very overrated. Itis the later seasons that annoy me, the characters became too stupid and cartoonish to be believable. And frankly, they got on my nerves. |

Hard to argue with you on that one...
When you think of "The Honeymooners", are you thinking about the so-called "Lost Episodes" or the "Classic 39", or both of them.
When I think of "The Honeymooners", it's the classic 39. |

Oh I certainly agree Seinfeld would not be number two. I meant that agree with the BBC on Bilko as number one. I share your love for The Honeymooners, but only the classic 39. The others are ok, but not among the greatest shows ever made for TV as the classic 39 are. And those would indeed be a close second. I can see Seinfeld comfortably in the top 25 or so, but no way is it number two.

I've had a chance to see episodes of the Bilko show since this thread was active, and I've got to say that I definitely understand why folks would consider this the #1 sitcom. What a clever show and a wonderful performance by Mr. Silvers! It was also fun to see many familiar faces that would later show up in other TV shows.
That said, THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW is still my choice for #1 sitcom.

Dick was one of the last good physical comedians in the traditional sense. But I only really enjoy the episodes that take place around work. Love Morey Amsterdam, Rose Marie, Richard Deacon, et. al. But the ones that focus on the home don't do much for me (e.g. the scratch on Rob's new car). I don't care as much for Mary Tyler Moore, Ann Morgan Guilbert, or Jerry Paris.
