Strangely enough, as much as I like him, he has very rarely made me laugh out loud, even when I see his films with an audience. I've always found his character and his films more interesting than funny.
Still, you've got to hand it to the guy. He created a myth about him that somehow helped rather than hindered his career. I mean, any man who comes across as hating children and dogs is not setting him up for a Mr. congeniality award.

It took me a while to understand Fields; at first, much as I found his lines funny, I didn't get his way of performing. Then I watched the cafétieria-sequence from Never Give a Sucker an Even Break, and all of a sudden I just...got it. Now, he must rank among the top five comedians who have made the laugh the hardest.  |
